- Corprisk SA appointed Alan to head and drive the IT fraud investigation at Zambia National Commercial Bank (Zanaco). The purpose of the fraud investigation was to identify the scope and depth of fraudulent transactions that occurred during a specific period, be it orchestrated internally, externally or using ghost accounts. Alan and his team reported directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Zanaco. The scope of the fraud investigation required a full understanding and investigation of the current business processes within Zanaco, system operating parameters, transaction rules imbedded in the various retail banking applications, home grown systems and user authentication. The team prepared and presented a report to the CEO, driving the next steps.

- Stellenbosch University appointed Alan as their Programme Manager to oversee the implementation of two strategic implementations, viz. Oracle Cloud Financials and Serosoft Solution’s Academia Student Administration system. These two major projects being critical to SUN’s digitalisation drive and system renewal strategy. His reporting line was directly to the Chief Operating Officer, functional reporting to the Chief Information Officer, and programme delivery responsibility to the Chief Director Finance and SUN’s Institutional registrar. As the SUNxxx Programme Manager, Alan’s scope of work encompassed all of the Programme Management Knowledge Areas defined by PMBoK, which includes planning, financial budgeting and control, reporting, management and control. Alan immediately addressed the shortcomings by adopting a hybrid model, embracing PMBoK to govern programme monitoring, management and control, and SAFe Agile to extract, define, plan and deliver the business processes and rules for the configuration of the two applications.

- Tupperware Brands welcomed Alan as a snr consulting Portfolio/Programme and Project Manager to Tupperware TEAM (Turkey, Europe, Africa and Middle East). His assignment was to formulate and establish a Project Management Office, drive Portfolio and Project Management governance disciplines and delivery. To also act as the subject matter expert within TEAM, under supervision of the TEAM Chief Information Officer. To achieve this, Alan formulated a roadmap for taking TEAM’s project management maturity level to at least a Level 4 over the next five years. The scope of TEAM’s portfolio management included all business critical, key retail and enhancement projects for Iberia, France, Germany, Poland and South Africa. To capitalise on Alan’s knowledge, the PMO custodian assigned Alan certain key strategic retail projects that required rectification due to lacking leadership and drive.

- Alan was appointed as snr Project Manager for the joint venture between i1 Solutions and 9TH Bit Consulting for Telkom SA’s retail customer platform transformation. The purpose of the project was to fully transform their current retail solution. The i1 Solutions/9TH Bit Consulting teams were responsible for the development of the integration layer, encompassing the following middleware applications, viz. JBoss, Fuse, Swagger and TM Forum. Integration to Telkom’s CRM solution (CRM Dynamics) was included as a scope change to improve the customer’s user experience. The project involved 7 vendors. Some of which were located in South Africa while others were located in Ireland and the United Kingdom. This required close liaison and coordination between the respective programme managers. All of whom reported into Telkom’s transformation programme. Alan’s project team consisted of developers, analysts, solution architects and a scrum master.

- Appointed as snr Project Manager to own and oversee the implementation, commissioning and activation of a virtual training presence. The main work streams for this project were the IT infrastructure and business software solution. The project stakeholders consisted of internal and external team members and contractors, responsible for providing hardware, application software, LAN, WAN and Internet components. The strategic drive of the project was to go live within an extremely short period of time, delivering full solution capability. The primary challenge of the project was to manage all stakeholders, paying particular attention to those tasks on the critical path. Although the project duration was rather short, classic project management was fully embraced. Specific focus on contract/vendor management was key to the success of the project.

- CIH appointed Alan as a Programme Manager to lead, drive and coordinate the implementation of CIH’s strategic CR2’s BankWorld retail banking financial solution. The banking financial solution consisted of a Mobile Banking and Internet Banking module. The Mobile Banking, Internet Banking module to be implemented at Bank Windhoek, Bank Gaborone and Cavmont Bank Zambia. The strategic project encompassed the classic software requirement, development, testing, and migration work streams of the various end users. Of particular importance were the Learning and Development, Marketing and Corporate Communication, Change Management, Process and Procedure business teams, supporting the project. The development work was demanding since bespoke integration components had to be developed, ensuring total stability between CR2’s BankWorld backend and the vanilla CR2 BankWorld solution. Complicating matters was the fact that the legacy internet banking system had to run in parallel to the client user base, whilst being migrated to the new CR2 BankWorld

- Alan was appointed as the Project Manager for the establishment of an Intermediary Consolidated Knowledge Factory (ICF), in support of Liberty’s 20/20 Vision. The SIMS project acted as vehicle for the Sourcing, Landing, Staging and Consolidation of all ICF data. Thereby revamping Intermediary Business Intelligence, using QlikView models, within the information Consumption Layer. The resource team consisted of SQL developers, off- shore testing teams (India), Data Quality, Meta Data and Data Governance custodians. It was a very challenging environment, demanding extreme coordination, resource acquisition and task prioritisation, supporting completion of project deliverables. The project environment placed a high demand on managing project politics, timeous completion of project deliverables, in support of the Project Owner and respective Stakeholders. During project execution, it transpired that a number of legacy systems had to be decommissioned. A sub project, tasked to decommissioning legacy systems, was established and Alan was made responsible.

- The rejuvenation programme appointed Alan as a snr Project Manager to manage the telephony upgrade programme and voice recording solution for Standard Bank’s Client Contact Centre’s. This was a project initiative between Dimension Data, Kana (Scotland) and SBSA. The project resources and international vendor reported to him. His core functional responsibility was to ensure middle ware rejuvenation, software development, testing and integration with the telephony programme. Supporting the above were the classic Software Development Life Cycle and vendor/contract management responsibilities.

- Having demonstrated his mettle, SBSA appointed Alan as a snr Project Manager to manage the development and roll out, of Standard Bank’s Financial Investment portfolio solution software, viz. BluePrint Professional. The purpose of the solution is to support the Financial Planner investment work force and client base. His core responsibility was that of single point of contact for ensuring enlivenment and Business (FICA, POPI) compliance. All of the classic programme and project management knowledge areas were extensively applied. The most challenging aspects were vendor management, viz. managing Liberty Life and Iress (Wealth Management Software), the primary solution providers. The project and work streams included interface development between Blueprint Professional, SAP and Standard Bank’s bespoke interface layer, utilising Microsoft’s BizTalk. Project activities included the full spectrum of software development, a mixture between Agile and Waterfall, contract management, vendor liaison, team engagement and supervision.
